Specialist Lending Solutions spoke to Rebecca Salt (pictured), Regional Sales Director - Midlands at Tuscan Capital.
Which locations and how many advisers and broker firms do you cover in your role at Tuscan Capital?
In my role at Tuscan Capital, I cover the Midlands region. This area has a diverse range of advisers and broker firms, each presenting unique opportunities and challenges. My primary focus is to ensure these professionals receive the best possible support and resources from Tuscan Capital to thrive in their markets.
What personal talent/skill is most valuable in doing your job?
Empathy and enthusiasm are the cornerstones of my professional approach. Empathy allows me to genuinely understand and address the needs of advisers and brokers, while my enthusiasm helps deliver solutions passionately and effectively. These skills are crucial in fostering strong, positive relationships and in driving the success of our clients.
What personal talent/skill would you most like to improve on?
It’s not entirely work-related but I would love to improve my golf skills. While I enjoy watching the sport and appreciate the precision it requires, I find that my own swing could use quite a bit of work. Enhancing this skill would not only allow me to enjoy my leisure time more but perhaps participate a bit more in those networking events that often take place on the greens.
What’s the hardest part of your job?
The most challenging aspect of working in business development, particularly in the dynamic and competitive field of short-term finance, is the difficulty in completely switching off from work. Balancing professional commitments with personal life is essential, but can be tough given the demanding nature of the job.
What do you love most about your job?
The personal aspect of my role is what I cherish the most. Building lasting relationships with brokers from various backgrounds and helping them achieve their professional goals is incredibly rewarding.
What’s the best bit of career-related advice you’ve ever been given? Who gave it to you?
The best advice I’ve received came from my father: “Work hard, always do the right thing, and be true to yourself.” These principles have guided me through various stages of my career and continue to influence my professional decisions and relationships.
How do you keep up to date with developments in the market?
I dedicate time each week to review local news and updates within the Midlands region, but also our industry generally, and sector specifically, via the trade press. Staying informed about the latest market trends and legislative changes ensures I can provide the most current and effective advice to our clients.
What is the most quirky/unique property deal you’ve been involved in?
One of the most unique deals I was involved in was the conversion of a church into a residential property. It was a fascinating project that creatively incorporated the church’s architectural features into a modern living space.
What was your motivation for choosing this career?
Inspired by my father, who spent his career in sales and relationship building, I was drawn to a career that mirrored his path but in the property finance sector.
If you could do any other job in the property sector, what would it be and why?
I would choose to be a property developer, particularly because of my passion for interior design. The process of transforming a property and tailoring it to perfection is something that excites me.
What is your strategy for tackling challenges?
My strategy is to maintain a positive outlook and focus on being solution-driven. Challenges are inevitable, but by maintaining a constructive attitude and looking for solutions rather than dwelling on problems, I can effectively overcome obstacles. I’m also helped by the Tuscan product proposition, its flexibility, and our willingness to look at deals on their individual merits, which allows us to offer solutions that other lenders can’t.
And finally, what’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?
While obtaining my driver’s licence in the US, I was once asked if the UK was part of Germany. That certainly took me by surprise and remains one of the strangest questions I’ve ever encountered.
